Jeep ducking, also known as Duck Duck Jeep, is a fun tradition among Jeep owners where they leave rubber ducks on other Jeeps. Sometimes a note accompanies these fun gifts saying things such as "Nice Jeep!" or "You've been Ducked!" The purpose is to spread kindness, fun, and create a sense of community among Jeep enthusiasts. Sharing unique ducks with other Jeep owners can be a challenge. Look no further. Imagine your duck recipient's delight when you leave this fun and useful duck to take it's rightful place with all the other ducks.

  • Don't forget to include a few extra beads to your count if you would like to make decorative dangles at the bottom of your keychain.

You could substitute seed beads or E-beads instead of pony beads if you would like to make a smaller version that would be perfect as earrings or a necklace pendant.
Alternatively, you could use white, pink or black pony beads in place of the yellow beads to create your duck, or make several in different colors.

Instructions:

Connect your cord to your keyring with a Lark's Head knot.
1. Fold the cord in half to find the center point. Attach the center of the cord to the key ring using a lark’s head knot, as shown in the photo. You may also tie it securely with a double knot.

2. Begin adding beads by following the duck pattern shown at the bottom of the page. Work one row at a time, keeping the beads snug but not pulled so tight that the duck curls or twists. You can click on the image for a larger, better resolution photo.

3. Continue weaving until the full duck shape is complete. The black beads form the eyes, the orange beads create the beak and feet, and the yellow beads make the body.

4. After finishing the pattern tie a double knot in the cords at the bottom and apply a good glue to secure. Let the glue dry completely.

5. For a decorative finishing touch, string three or four extra beads onto each cord end to create little dangles. Tie a knot below the beads to hold them in place. (This is optional and not included in the bead count in your material list.)

6. Weave your wire or pipe cleaner through your beaded ducky keychain to make it stiffer and hold it's shape.

(Seed beads or E beads can be used in place of pony beads to create smaller characters.)

Your happy little duck is now ready to clip onto keys, bags, backpacks, zipper pulls, dash mirrors or even gift packages.

Fun Facts

Origin of Jeep Ducking

The practice began in 2020 when Allison Parliament, a Jeep owner from Canada, placed a rubber duck on another Jeep in a parking lot. After a challenging day, she wanted to brighten someone else's mood. This simple act of kindness quickly gained popularity and became a viral trend, leading to the widespread adoption of the practice among Jeep owners.

How to Participate in Jeep Ducking

If you want to join in on the fun, here's how:
  1. Gather Your Ducks: Make these duck keychains or purchase rubber ducks from stores or online.
  2. Customize Them: If you would like you can write a friendly message, your name, the date, the location or any other fun fact on the duck.
  3. Spot a Jeep Recipient: Jook for a Jeep that you admire and place the duck in a visible spot for the owner to find it.
  4. Take a Picture: Take a picture of your share. (Be careful not to include the recipient's personal information like license plate.)
  5. Share the Fun: Share your experience on social media using the hashtag #DuckDuckJeep.
Jeep ducking has fostered a sense of camaraderie among Jeep owners. It has also inspired various charitable initiatives, with Jeep owners using the trend to raise funds for causes like veterans and children's hospitals. The movement has grown significantly, with many Jeep owners proudly displaying their collection of ducks on their dashboards.
This lighthearted tradition continues to spread positivity and strengthen the bonds within the Jeep community.
