Gone are the days of one type of glitter for all. Today we can choose from many different colors, sizes and shapes of glitter. Below is a general guideline to help you decide what type of glitter is best for your project.
- Micro Fine Glitter - Size Range: .002-.004 inches or .065-.1mm
- Ultra Fine Glitter - Size Range: .008 inches or .2mm. Also referred to as glitter dust, is excellent for using in makeup, in jewelry, mixing in paint or nail polish, mixing into glue and more.
- Extra Fine Glitter - Size: .01-.015 inches or .254-.375mm
- Very Fine Glitter - Size: .016-.025 inches or .4-.625mm. Slightly more coarse than ultra fine.
- Fine Glitter - Size Range: .031-.040 inches or .787-1mm inches. This is the most commonly used glitter. It covers well and has a good glimmer shine. It is easier to clean up than the ultra fine and very fine glitters.
- Medium Glitter - Size Range: .042-.094 inches or 1.067-2.385mm. Used most when your project is meant to be seen from a distance.
- Large Glitter - Size Range: .1-.125 inches or 2.54-3.125mm. Not generally chosen for paper mediums, this glitter would be good for larger projects to be seen from a longer distance.
- Extra Large Glitter - Size Range: 1/4 inch or 6.25mm
- Glitter Shapes - Just like their name. Similar to confetti but smaller pieces.
How to add glitters to anything without it falling off
Wash any oils or dirt off of your item and dry completely. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to your project. Add craft glitter. After it is dry, apply another coat of Mod Podge to the item to seal it. Be sure to use the glossy kind.Helpful Tips for working with glitters:
- For wearable projects: Use permanent fabric glue so you can wash your project. Once your craft glitter has been applied, turn the item inside out to wash and do not put it in the dryer.
- For thin lines & glittered words: Use glue pen to write your design, then apply glitter.
- For less waste and ease of cleanup: Use a sheet of paper, a tray or even a paper plate that can easily be folded in half under your project. When finished fold your paper to funnel your glitter back into it's container.
